This is my third post in The Branding Series that I created for the DIY entrepreneur. Join my email list as we go through the stages of branding your business from mindset to execution. Today’s post is all about finding your why in business and what that means.

To build a solid, memorable brand your audience MUST connect with your why.

Your why is usually what makes your brand unique and stand out compared to a competitor.
Your why is the beliefs behind the brand, the reason why you’re in business in the first place.

Your why must be powerful enough for people to want to support you.

After you’ve answered all these questions look at your social media, ads and overall branding.
Do your branding and social-media reflect these answers?
Are these ideas very clear in your branding? So clear that if a stranger who does not know your brand stumbles onto you, would they know what you’re about and believe after a quick 2 min read through? Be honest.

It’s more than just the money

There are many reasons why persons become entrepreneurs; personal satisfaction, creative independence, financial freedom.. honestly the list goes on. Yet all of these have one thing in common. At the core, they all are about freedom.

Money is also a driving factor as to why some people become business owners. Though, if money is your only driving force you’ll notice that eventually, you’ll lose your willingness to continue. Business is hard and most times it takes a while for a business to make any profit. This means it’s usually a losing game financially until you profit. Your business should have another driving force. That ‘why’ that will give you satisfaction. While your business might be losing money, you get to accomplish so much more that aligns with your goals and values. Because of that shining factor, you don’t mind the long nights, losses and headaches that come with owning a business, because you get to do what you love. You believe in that vision so much that you’re willing to give it you’re all regardless of the money and your customers can sense that.

If we understand why we do what we do, we can decide what to do next and when to do it. And in many cases, we can do so autonomously, knowing that we’re working towards a common cause we all believe in.

What drives your business?

Most times when people sign up for my one on one consultation, and when I visit their page I see the first issue as to why they don’t get as many sales. Their social media is a mix-matched mess. Sometimes it’s not clear what they sell and to whom. Visuals aside, they have not set up clearing ordering guidelines, or a clear social media strategy. Their page is sometimes generic and I have no idea what is their WHY.

Find your story. Find your angle

The second step to clear branding and better sales? Planning- Understanding your WHY.
